Paper Structure

The UPSC Civil Services Examination (CSE) is a highly competitive exam that is conducted in three stages. The exam is designed to assess the candidate's overall intellectual and social suitability for a career in the civil services. Here is the typical paper structure of the UPSC CSE:

Stage 1: Preliminary Examination

The Preliminary Examination is the first stage of the UPSC CSE and is conducted in two papers:

  1. General Studies Paper 1
  2. General Studies Paper 2 (CSAT)

Both papers are objective type and are conducted for a duration of two hours each. The General Studies Paper 1 includes questions on current events, Indian history, geography, Indian polity, economics, and environmental ecology.   The General Studies Paper 2 tests the candidate's aptitude, comprehension, and decision-making abilities.

Stage 2: Mains Examination

The Mains Examination is the second stage of the UPSC CSE and is conducted in nine papers:

  1. Paper A: Indian Language
  2. Paper B: English
  3. Essay Paper
  4. General Studies Paper 1
  5. General Studies Paper 2
  6. General Studies Paper 3
  7. General Studies Paper 4
  8. Optional Subject Paper 1
  9. Optional Subject Paper 2

All papers are subjective type, except Paper B, and are conducted for a duration of three hours each. The Indian Language and English papers are of qualifying nature and the candidate is required to score a minimum of 25% in each of these papers. The essay paper tests the candidate's ability to express their thoughts clearly and effectively. The General Studies Papers 1 to 4 cover a wide range of subjects, including history, geography, Indian polity, economics, international relations, ethics, and integrity. The Optional Subject Papers 1 and 2 are based on the candidate's choice of subject from a list of available subjects.

Stage 3: Personality Test/Interview

The Personality Test/Interview is the third and final stage of the UPSC CSE. Candidates who qualify for the Mains Examination are eligible to appear for the Personality Test/Interview. The test is conducted by a board of experts who evaluate the candidate's overall personality, communication skills, leadership qualities, and suitability for a career in the civil services.

Overall, the UPSC CSE is a rigorous and challenging exam that requires thorough preparation and dedication from the candidate. With the right approach and strategy, however, it is possible to crack the exam and pursue a rewarding career in the civil services.
